Chieftain’s Bowmore 2001 16 Year Old Single Malt Whisky (Whiskimen Exclusive)
Limited bottle exclusively provided by Whiskimen.
Nose: very fruity with banana, grilled pineapple, smoked pear, some herbal notes of roasted rosemary and liquorice, but at the same time some white floral note of peonies, some sweet dry barley husk, dry and sweet smokiness, hint of fish oil and hot beach sands with some oyster shell to bring out the coastal notes. Very complex islay nose. Well done again post-1998 Bowmore.
Palate: Floral with rose and lavender but shortly after the smoke and peat rushing in. A smoky Bowmore for sure, the smoke is dry and dark but a bit of “wok”. When you get used to the smoke, the floralness comes back in with some menthol.
Finish: barley sweetness with some strong citrus note of grapefruit and passionfruit, smoke linger on but well integrated with the sweet and citrus note, the saltiness also enhanced the sweet tone on the tip of the tongue.
Verdict: Beautifully complex Bowmore with a complex nose, pleasant palate, and lingering sweet citrusy smoke finish. Bravo.
